Little Evidence of Vermont Springtime at Red Rocks

To celebrate finishing and uploading a new Sueetie Feature I stopped by Red Rocks Park to see if Vermont Springtime had arrived at the park.  April 20th and still very little evidence of Spring.  That's okay. We enjoy the delayed gratification of Spring here, so all is well.  I'll check again soon and let you know when it arrives.

First Visit to Das Bierhaus

Dasbierhaus0410

I completely enjoyed my first visit to Das Bierhaus tonight with a buddy. We sat on the rooftop terrace in 50 degree weather and enjoyed several excellent authentic German beers, Bratwurst, soft pretzels and sauerkraut. We were on the roof because the first floor dining area and second floor bar was packed.

The pretzel was excellent, the bratwurst and sauerkraut very good. Nothing fancy, but it seemed like the real deal.

The staff was top notch from start to finish. All of the waitresses wore authentic German garb. Pretty cool. Jessica was our waitress and she was super.

The most interesting thing to tell you was that one of the beers I had which was flavored with banana. My first, and that's saying something. Yes, I might have to go back for some of that banana-flavored beer.

South Burlington blue skies but little green

This was such a beautiful day in Vermont that I had to spend some time on one of the South Burlington bike trails, here between Stonehedge and the UVM White Barn. As you can see, beautiful blue skies but little green yet here on April 10.

Now Playing on the Kitchen DVD, "Outlaw Josey Wales"

Web

Now Playing on the Kitchen DVD, "Outlaw Josey Wales."  I'll try to refrain from spewing out an endless series of quotes, but have to share just one.

Fletcher just brought in his band of Confederate hold-outs to the Senator who says, "The war's over. Our side won the war. Now we must busy ourselves winning the peace. And Fletcher, there's an old saying: To the victors belong the spoils." To which Fletcher responds, "There's another old saying, Senator: Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining."

Different Trains

Reich1230

One of my favorite albums is Steve Reich's "Different Trains." I've been listening to it for over 20 years. (Wow.)

The album captures the central role of trains in the early and mid 20th century. A cut from the album happened to come up in my Pandora Steve Reich Radio stream and I was reminded how perfectly the cover captures the material with it's train tracks and gravel that have no beginning and no end.

Stick Season arrives at Red Rocks Park

Unusually warm temperatures in Vermont for a late November Saturday, compensating in part for our lack of a summer perhaps. By the calendar winter has not yet officially arrived, though to be sure Stick Season in Vermont is here as you'll see in the photos of today's visit to Red Rocks Park in South Burlington.

Tweetup Serendipity. Meeting @rnadworny

Soccer0926

My little girl has played Saturday morning soccer with the Greater Burlington Girls Soccer League for years.  Above is an action shot from today's big game. We arrived a little early this morning, so after we established our spot on the sidelines I skipped off to Speeder and Earl's. The game was underway when I returned by which point this fun fellow was in a chair a few feet from mine cheering away. There was a near score for our side and both of us yelled the same disappointing groan in unison. "We seem to be rooting for the same team," I said to him. From that point on we chatted away with my wife filling in for my lack of soccer acumen.

At the end of the game I wanted to officially introduce myself to him. "You're Dave Burke." He said. "Holy crap, you're Rich Nadworny!" I've been following Rich whose twittername is @rnadworny for about as long as I've been using Twitter. I've been subscribed to his digalicious blog, always interested in what he has to say about marketing and social media. I had messaged him once because he sometimes tweets about running and I was sure I saw him running on a South Burlington street, but Rich told me he runs on the Burlington North Side and it had to be somebody else.

About a month ago we exchanged DM's about getting together to talk business and I've been meaning to lock-in a time and place. What I was unable to do, fate and the Greater Burlington Girls Soccer League did for me. I got to meet @rnadworny!  The interesting thing was that I really enjoyed hanging with this guy on the sidelines. I even unplugged from my Zune to engage with him. (I was listening to the On Point Radio "Week in the News" podcast. Hopefully I'll get to finish it later.)  And in case you're wondering, the topics of Twitter and Social Media never came up.

So let's review. I've been following and reading Rich Nadworny for quite awhile. I know a good bit about him, know his business, read most everything he writes, click on tweet links which he finds interesting, and this morning I spend an hour yelling "Go Hippos!" with this cool guy I never met who turns out to be someone I already knew.

Great meeting you, @rnadworny!

Five Miles is my Apple a Day

04052410

Such a beautiful day for a run here in Burlington, Vermont.  Early fall, with blue skies and temperatures in the 60's. I've returned to running a few weeks ago. For the last year I settled on spending 60 minutes on my office Nordic Track Ski machine reading geeky books, but I've come to realize how important it is to supplement that machine time with real running.

While I get to read geeky books on the Nordic Track, running is a time to think.  No iPod, Zune, audio books, podcasts, music, nothing to hinder the free flow of thought.  And then there's the beauty of the biking trails around my home.  Above is a photo of one of the scenes of today's run at about the half-way point. Just beautiful. I simply don't understand runners around here who run on traffic'd roads with the noise, distraction and other ugliness from automobiles when there's so many available off-road trails.  Either they are vain and want to be seen or just stupid.

I ran five miles today.  The first time I've done that in a while, but I plan on doing five miles every time I go out. That was my habit, with alternating days on the Nordic Track and running five or more miles. There's something about hitting the five mile mark that makes me feel that I've crossed that "apple a day to keep the doctor away" threshold. Will let you know if it works.

Bernie Buzz for September 23, 2009

IS THE RECESSION OVER?

"Very likely," Fed Chairman Bernanke ventured. "Don't believe it," Bernie shot back, citing the 26 million Americans who are out of work, stopped hunting for a job or settled for part-time employment. To watch Senator Sanders Unfiltered, click here

Afghanistan

"My fear is that we can get sucked into a quagmire like we did in Vietnam and Iraq," the senator said in response to calls for more troops. "We have not been clear about what our goal is in Afghanistan and what our exit strategy is. The alternatives are not simply to pull out tomorrow or put in tens of thousands of more troops."
